Gateway Youth Hockey heats up the ice

Pee Wee Warriors

The Gateway Warriors rang in the new year with a 4-0 win against Weymouth on Jan. 1. Jared Westgate, Jackson St. Don, and Noah DeMoranville played strong defense in front of Steven Strachan, who earned the shutout.

Westgate also led the Warriors offensively, finishing with two goals. Jake DeMoranville’s scored his ninth goal and tallied his ninth assist of the season. His brother Ben also scored unassisted.

The Warriors went on to capture their 15th Yankee Conference win on Jan. 5 with a 5-1 victory over the Lower Cape Coyotes. Ben DeMoranville led Warrior scoring with two goals and an assist and Robert Ramsay also netted a pair of goals. Danny Flynn added the fifth goal to bring his team-leading total to 15.

Pee Wee Predators

It was a tale of two games for the Gateway Predators Sunday doubleheader against Nantucket.

After dropping the first game 6-0, the Predators played to a 4-3 loss in the second. Tyler and Zack Lovendale each scored a goal assisted by Quirino doCanto to put the Predators up 2-0 early in the second period.

With four minutes left in the game and the score tied 3-3 a Nantucket player scored a wrap around goal on Predators goalie Zack Pateakos, who turned away multiple break away shots in the losing effort.

The next two games for the Predators will be a double header against the second Nantucket team next weekend at Hetland Arena.

Squirt Grizzlies

The Squirt Grizzlies defeated Yarmouth-Dennis 5-1 in a Cape League game at Tony Kent Arena on Saturday. The Grizzlies were led by Chris Gauvin, who had a hat trick, and the strong goalie play of Ryker King.

The next game for the Grizzlies will be against Duxbury on Sunday, Jan 12. at 8:40 a.m. in Hyannis.

Mites

The Mite Bobcats lost a pair of tough games this weekend. The first was a 9-4 loss to Nantucket and the second was a 19-18 nail-biter against Martha's Vineyard. The leading scorers for the Bobcats were Juni Suarez, Derek Gauvin, Trendyn Medeiros and Michael Radek.
