Girls tennis takes non-conference match with Bourne

Apr 2, 2024

The Wareham Vikings high school girls tennis team took home a 4-1 match against Bourne high school in the team’s first outing of the season.

Since Wareham moved to the Mayflower Conference last year, this is the first time the two teams have met in a non-conference matchup.

The Mayflower Conference only has three teams that play tennis, said coach Geoff Swett. “It’s going to be a very different year for us.”

However, many of the coaches he has known for decades are willing to play Wareham as a non-conference opponent, Swett said.

Wareham players won four out of five matchups with their Bourne counterparts, giving over only a close loss at 2nd doubles where freshman Nevaeh Smith and eighth grader Juliana Statkus “held their own against a much older Bourne team,” Swett said.

Brooklyn Bindas, Julia McDuffy and Stoney Ferry took home their 1st, 2nd and 3rd singles matches respectively, and Evie Frances paired with Keira Pierre to win a close match at 1st doubles.

Swett has been pleased with the team’s results in an early scrimmage, he said.

“We’re lucky that we have some returning seniors, not just for skill but for maturity,” he said.
