After a stellar season and second place finish in the South Coast Conference, the girls track and field team took eight athletes to the Division 4 state meet in Boston on Sunday.

The top finisher for the Lady Vikings was freshman Madison Koslowsky, who placed 11th in the 55 meter high hurdles in a time of 9.30 seconds, a personal best. Girls coach Chris Gardner said she was the second fastest freshman in the event across all divisions in the state.

On top of that, Gardner said, "She has been battling a knee injury on her trail leg for the past month or so. This past week was her first full week of practice since Jan. 27."

"We're a really young team," said sophomore Paige Fehskens, who placed 20th in the 1,000 meter run, with a near season best time of 3:21.86. "We have a lot more depth this year, a lot of new people The eighth grade waiver really helps us," she said.

All told, eighth-graders make up a quarter of the girls track and field team and many of the girls who qualified for the state meet were underclassmen, however, the two best finishers aside from Koslowsky were seniors.

"As freshmen watching seniors I never thought we'd get to where they were," said senior Kelley Peterson, who was 15th in the 600 meter run in a time of 1:51.49.

In the field events, senior Emily Cummings cleared 4' 10" in the High Jump and placed 14th, while in the Shot Put, Lexie Calvin placed 17th with a throw of 28' 10.5" and Caitlyn Berger placed 18th with 28' 9.25."

In the 55 meter dash Hunter Thatcher placed 72nd with a time of 8.22 seconds and Ruth Gonzalez placed 83rd with a time of 8.46 seconds.

Junior Madison St. Julien, who won the 300 meter dash at the SCC championship, elected not to run in Sunday's meet to go on a mission trip to Haiti with fellow church members. Her time at that meet, when converted to the speedy banked track at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, would have placed her sixth.

Both the girls and coach Gardner are optimistic about the coming outdoor season.

"We're a stronger team now overall. The people on team want to be here," Berger said.
