Gone fishin' at Horseshoe Mill

Oct 18, 2014

Give a kid a fish and feed him for a day, but teach a kid to make a fishing pole and he'll probably have some fun.

That was the case on Friday when about a dozen kids and their parents participated in the "Make Your Own Fishing Pole" program put on by the Buzzards Bay Coalition at Horseshoe Mill.

"We did it during the summer camps and the kids had a blast," said Meghan Gahn, outdoor educator with the Coalition and one of the organizers of the outing.

Kids first had to find a suitable stick in the woods next to the pond, and then were able to personalize it with different color strings ands beads. After organizers put hooks on the end of each kid's line, they attached a piece a of hot dog and drop casted into the water.

The program was part of the Coalition's Family Friday Explorations program which runs over the course of three Fridays in October and offers hands-on activities for families at different conservation areas in Wareham.

Even though the fish weren't biting, kids were able to see some wildlife such as a small water snake and a turtle.

The next (and final) Family Friday Exploration program will be an Orienteering/Scavenger Hunt outing at the Mass Audubon Great Neck Wildlife Sanctuary on Oct. 24 at 5 p.m.
