Graduating seniors receive warm send off from elementary students

Jun 9, 2017

Graduating seniors earned a reception usually reserved for rock stars on Thursday.

Members of Wareham High School’s Class of 2017 took a stroll through Decas Elementary and Minot Forest Schools on that day amid cheers from young students. Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood said this was the first year the senior class returned for a walk through the halls dressed in caps and gowns before graduation. Shaver-Hood said the plan is to start is a new tradition in the district.

The initial run went well, she said.

“Today was fabulous,” said Shaver-Hood. “The younger students couldn’t have been more enthusiastic and the seniors truly appreciated the welcome.”

In Minot Forest halls, all students stood with streamers and handmade signs, yelling and shouting as the seniors walked past. There were high fives, hugs and a few reunions as seniors greeted former teachers.

“This was my favorite day of the year,” said one senior before boarding a bus back to the high school.

“I did not expect that,” said another.

The Wareham High School graduation is scheduled for June 9 at 6:30 p.m. on Spillane Field.
