Greeting the Gatemen

Jun 11, 2010

Opening Day may have been Sunday, but the opening event for the Gatemen was Thursday, June 10, as players, interns, host families, and organization members gathered for a dinner buffet at Bay Pointe Country Club.

The annual dinner was the new players' official welcome to the Gatemen, and President Tom Gay spoke about the incredible opportunity that the players would experience as part of the Cape Cod Baseball League, the "premier summer baseball league."

"Scouts are already watching," Gay said.  "ESPN.com named Opening Day as the number one baseball event of the summer, games at Chatham will be broadcast in New York, and I've already received calls about three players.  That's the attention we get, that's the exposure."

Organization member Bill Reed provided a bit of the unofficial history of the Gatemen in announcing the dedication of this year's media guide to former Gatemen volunteer Bus Driver John McBride who, according to Reed, broadcast news of the team's victory or defeat according to the route he took into town - either sheepishly driving down Merchant's Way, or cruising down Main Street with horns blaring.

But the highlight of the evening was the annual skit, which this year featured a dramatic reenactment of the television show Dancing with the Stars.  Thankfully, for fans (and regretfully, for the players who participated) we have recorded it for posterity on WarehamVillageSoup.com.
