Harlem Wizards bring basketball magic to Wareham
The Harlem Wizards brought their high-flying, show-stopping routine to Wareham High School on Saturday where hundreds of people enjoyed the Wizards brand of skills, dunks and pranks, all for a great cause.
Janet Leonardo, president for the non-profit Village PTA organization said the proceeds from the event, which is in its second year, go toward a fundraising effort for field trips and in school enrichment at Minot Forest Elementary and East Wareham Early Childhood Center.
"We got their fundraiser flyer in the mail last year and last year was so successful we had to bring them back, and this year is even more successful," she said.
The Wizards played an exhibition game against the Wareham Warriors, a team comprised of Wareham varsity basketball players, such as Mason Vasconcellos and Amber Filkins, basketball coaches Kevin and Dave Brogioli and other Warehma teachers and parents.
The Wizards entertained the packed crowd in the Wareham High School gym with flips, alley-oops, and ball handling skills that could rival the pros.
But the biggest part of the Wizards game are the tricks they pull during the game on the opposing team, the referees and most importantly, members of the audience.
Nine-year-old Daniel Gordon said his favorite part of the night was playing on the court during halftime. Kids got the opportunity to come on the court during halftime to shoot some hoops or dance with the Wizards players and after the game all the Wizards were available for autographs
Leonardo said it would be some time before the exact amount of money raised is known but judging by the size of the crowd it's safe to say the event was a fundraising success.
Leonardo said in addition to the Harlem Wizards they are looking to do a "Touch a Truck" fundraising effort in the spring with the help of local police and fire departments.
