Harris Provisions: built on community support, local partnerships

Jul 14, 2021

Nestled in the small but bright and decorated alleyway between the Post Office and Riptide Tattoo on Onset Avenue, a new entrepreneur, Will Harris, has opened a business where locals can pick up coffee and grab a bite to eat.

He said his business began out of his love for food and his passion for sharing coffee with others.

“I started off just making coffee at my house and bringing it around to friends, and collecting feedback,” Harris said. “Before long, people started to make baked goods in anticipation of me coming — sometimes it’d be cookies, sometimes it’d be bread, it’d be scones.”

He said it quickly got to the point that if someone didn’t have baked goods, they would ask if they could give him cash instead.

“The coffee business just grew from there,” Harris said. “Friends were telling friends and those friends were telling their friends — and it just grew in concentric circles.”

He wanted to have a physical business presence eventually. So, with the help of his siblings Julie and Kevin, he launched his business, Harris Provisions, out of a trolley car that was built atop a boat trailer.

When it was originally built, the trolley car was destined to be a hot dog stand. Before it could be used for that purpose, however, the man who hoped to open the trolley car-based business died.

When Harris Provisions opened, it was the first business to really operate out of the trolley, which is owned by Michelle Brodeur of Front Yard Gallery and Onset Bay Trading Company and the Gallery on East.

Harris said that occasionally the tight quarters inside the trolley car can present inventory challenges — and challenges when it comes to preparing coffee and food with his siblings, especially when there’s a line of people waiting.

“This is a tight spot,” he said of the inside of the trolley car. “It’s testing our patience, moreover and I think that’s what’s kind of fun about it.”

Despite the learning curve, Harris said the business wouldn’t exist without the help of his siblings.

“They’ve been my rock,” he said. “I honestly could not be doing this alone.”

Harris Provisions’ menu features items like breakfast sandwiches, pour over coffee and baked goods. One big hit has been the classic breakfast sandwich, which is an over-medium egg, smoked mozzarella, aged New York cheddar and bacon on an English muffin.

“We’re sourcing most of our ingredients pretty locally,” Harris explained. “Our bread’s coming from Hearth Artisan in Plymouth, we’re using English muffins right out of Boston Stone & Skillet — they do a fantastic job. Our coffee, too — that’s coming from Speedwell roasters up in Plymouth.”

He said he hoped to continue to work with “as many local providers” as he can.

“That’s sort of the grander goal is to build a community out of this and have as much collaboration as possible,” Harris said.

Another unique thing customers can find at Harris Provisions is fresh pour over coffee, Harris said.

“Everything that we’re doing with the coffee is very fresh,” he said. “We take the Brazilian bean and we grind it on the spot, and we take 204-degree water and just take our time in circles — go roundabout the grounds and extract all the little nuances that the roasters are working so hard to get.”

He said he didn’t know many people using the pour over method locally — apart from those who brew at home.

Harris also said it’s been fun getting to know his customers.

“I’d love to meet as many people as I can — that’s the goal,” he said.

Harris Provisions is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.
