High-flying fun at the Gleason Family YMCA
On a hot afternoon earlier this month, Vyper Latulippe was suspended from a trapeze 50 feet in the air. Wearing a harness, of course.
It's all in a day's work for kids enrolled in Camp Nep-In-Nae's Adventure Challenge program at the Gleason Family YMCA.
"It's like a rush when you're in the air," says Vyper, 12, who was the first member of the group to try the "Pamper Pole," a high-ropes element at Nep-In-Nae that involves climbing to the top of a telephone pole and jumping to a hanging trapeze.
"I've heard that not that many people can do it, so it's pretty cool to be able to," he says.
Along with both high and low ropes courses, Adventure Challenge participants take part in other exciting activities. One night, the group slept over at camp in shelters they made themselves.
Camp Nep-In-Nae, which was founded in 2004 and runs throughout the summer, is something many kids look forward to every year, organizers say. Several of the kids in the Adventure Challenge program have been coming to Nep-In-Nae since its first year.
When the group was polled as to what part of coming to camp is their favorite, the overwhelming response was: "friends."
"This camp is a great place to meet new friends. I have friends I only get to see when I come here," says Kyra Hammond, 12, who later tried the high ropes course. "That's my favorite part of camp."
"My favorite part about camp is the counselors," says Autumn Sprague, 11. "[Camp counselors] Brandon and Eileen are my favorite two people in the entire world other than my mom and dad."
"Love that," says 18-year-old camp counselor Brandon Mello with a laugh. "I like having an impact on kids lives. They mean a lot to us here."
Camp Nep-In-Nae runs until August 30th at the Gleason Y.
