Holy Halloween: Bridge Church holds Fall Fest
Pastor Barry Hanson of the Bridge Church in Onset wants his Fall Fest, like all of his church’s offerings, to “make the world a better place.”
Dressed as “Jesus with a mullet,” munching on a hot dog and handing out candy from his dinosaur-themed trunk, he wants the free Halloween-night festival to “share God’s love with the community.”
“We just want to bless our community and provide a safe alternative to walking down darkened streets,” he added.
Preachers and creatures — including, oddly enough, some devils — mingled outside the church as loudspeakers played Halloween classics like “The Monster Mash.”
The festivities included a bouncy house, popcorn, cotton candy, an “American Gladiators”-style inflatable arena and a dozen cars participating in trunk-or-treating — although Hanson and Pastor Dave Ferrari debate the use of that term.
“We don’t actually pull tricks on anyone,” he said.
The church’s location in Carver has offered trunk-or-treating for years, while its Onset location held a Fall Fest. This year, they combined the two events.
Hanson said that there was “enough candy to send you to the dentist” — 75 pounds of it, in fact, all donated by church members. They decorated their trunks with a combination of Halloween and biblical themes, bearing signs such as “Taste and see that the Lord is good” and “Jesus loves you s’more than you know!”
“The reason why we have the Trunk or Treat is to have a safe spot for the kids to come enjoy themselves,” said Pastor Lisa Tavares, director of Kid Zitty, a children’s ministry program. “One-stop everything — candy, games, food. It’s showing God’s love.”
