Hundreds flock to Swan Festival after 6-year hiatus

The Swan Festival came back with a bang after a six-year lull, with hundreds enjoying the live music and the smell of kettle corn wafting through the air Saturday.

The Wareham Village Association has not hosted the Swan Festival in Wareham since 2011, said Tracy McGraw, president of the Wareham Village Association.

“We said, let’s just do it and see what happens, and the response was crazy, crazy good,” McGraw said, adding that 22 vendors paid for a spot on Merchants Way.

“The swans have kind of become the Wareham mascot,” McGraw said.

Besse Park was filled with inflatable objects, a face painting station and other games and activities for kids. Merchants Way was home to various vendors. Business owners enjoyed the opportunity to gain exposure and new customers.

“It’s nice to do local events,” said Joan Baptiste of Heavenly Goddess in East Wareham, who said she had good business on Saturday despite the cool weather. “I can pick up repeat customers this way.”

Now that the Swan Festival has been reignited, McGraw said it will be a yearly event once again.
