Iconic inn almost set to undergo long-awaited facelift
Originally intended to open in April of 2013, the Glen Cove Inn and Restaurant (formerly known as The Glen Cove Hotel, the Onset Harbor Inn, and the Stonebridge Inn, to name a few) is expected to undergo some changes in the near future that should have it ready to go by spring of 2015.
Purchased by John and Mark Salerno—owners of Marc Anthony's Pizzeria and Salerno's Seaside Function Hall in Onset—in 2012, the big, yellow, iconic Onset inn at 167 Onset Avenue will undergo a bit of a transformation in the upcoming months.
“We didn’t know what we wanted to do with the building,” said John Salerno. “It needs some services. We took a step back and looked at it.”
Though they didn’t initially know what they wanted to change, the Salernos decided it needed an elevator to accompany a large, beautiful, staircase that is currently the only access to each of the buildings four main floors, not including the basement.
Salerno said they expect to obtain the last of the legal permits (necessary to start construction) some time this week, and that they’ve hired a local architect to construct the new elevator, which he said should not affect the integrity of the building.
“You really almost wouldn’t know that we did [once the work is complete],” he said. “It’s going to look like it always did. Now the building has a way to get around in it.”
Salerno said the permitting process was also a major factor in the delay of the project, but he’s optimistic that they’ll get moving on changes soon.
Since the Salernos purchased the building, a home that sat on the back of the property has been moved down the street in Onset, and Salerno said the intention is to eventually add a new building onto that portion of the property, possibly to house some guest suites.
“We hope to have the permit and get construction underway,” he said. That’s where we are. It took a little while.”
Contrary to the some rumors regarding the once-popular tiki bar, pool, and pub that sit on the property reopening, Salerno said that would not be happening.
“We’re just going to concentrate on the one building,” he said, “and that would include the restaurant and the lounge.”
Still, he’s confident that the inn and the restaurant and lounge reopening are a good thing for Onset.
“It’s going to be a big asset to the town,” he said.
As for the inn itself, the brothers don't anticipate much renovation besides some exterior landscaping and other aesthetic improvements, aside from the elevator project.
"There's been work done over the years with the different owners," Mark Salerno said, “so the rooms are nearly ready-to-go.”
