Inking sinners, saints and everyone in between
It’s four o’clock on Thursday and Sinners & Saints Tattooo, now open at its new location in Onset, is in full swing; all six tattoo artists have a client, and a group of teenage girls waits their turn in a corner. A toddler is wandering the floor, watched closely by his mother, curiously looking at the rush of people.
According to owner Tracy Knowles, family is a constant theme at Sinners & Saints.
“We’re here to mark your memories, your hopes and your dreams permanently. We want to hear the stories behind your artwork,” says Knowles. “That’s what family is.”
The move to a more central location at 2 W Central Ave. happened this fall and has been helpful to the “family” as well. The shop’s previous location at 37 Depot St. had run out of room to expand.
“It was a celebration and also a way to rebrand,” Tracy explained. “We want everyone to feel welcome coming in here. Moving was a fresh start for all of us.”
Last year marked the 10th anniversary of Sinners & Saints, and November was the one-year anniversary of Tracy and her husband Troy’s ownership.
Tracy began working at Sinners & Saints several years ago, after multiple overseas deployments and a medical discharge from the military. When the previous owner began to talk of retiring and closing the parlor down in 2015, she wanted to see it remain open. She and Troy talked about taking over the business and eventually bought it in November of 2015.
A family of a different kind also motivated the Knowles to continue Sinners & Saints. “The artists are like my family. I come in to work every day with my brothers and sisters,” said Tracy.
She explained that tattoo artists don’t move around a lot, once they’ve found a job. So when last owner planned to close, the artists were going to be looking for work in the slow season.
“I didn’t want that for them,” she said.
Each member of the family can perform any of the services offered in the shop, according to Tracy, but each also specializes in a certain tattoo style. Specializations include traditional American tattoos, tattoo coverups and Japanese-inspired artwork. The six tattoo artists are not alone, either. There’s also a skilled piercer. Each artist has between 10 and 15 years of experience.
