Inspired by shooting victim's story, Wareham High student creates anti-bullying club

After 17-year-old Rachel Scott was killed during the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, her family set out to spread the message of kindness and compassion that they found in the six journals she left behind.

Rachel's family shares her story through "Rachel's Challenge," a presentation in which viewers are encouraged to create the “chain reaction of compassion" that Rachel wrote about before her death.

Rachel's Challenge was presented at Wareham High School last year, and Sophomore Class President Quinn Staley is hoping to keep its message on the forefront of students' minds.

When school starts next month, Staley will be recruiting students for the Rachel's Challenge Club. She hopes the club will help students battle bullying and harassment in school.

"People have wished for a club that would help with anti-bullying," Staley told the School Committee on Wednesday. "I think it's going to change the atmosphere [and] how we treat each other."

Staley said she was inspired to start the club after noticing that, when the Rachel's Challenge program visited the high school, "it impacted a lot of people in a way that I hadn't seen before."

Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino echoed that sentiment, and said he was excited for the club.

"It's bringing awareness of bullying and harassment ... and the constant reminder that not only is [bullying] inappropriate, but it isn't going to be tolerated," Palladino said, adding that he thinks the club will help students "feel more comfortable and have a more positive self esteem."

The Scotty Monteiro Jr. Foundation, a community nonprofit that promotes anti-violence, has offered to pay for student training associated with the club, Palladino said.

"I applaud you for coming and saying that this is what you want to do," School Committee member Rhonda Veugen told Staley.

All three members of the School Committee present at the meeting gave a vote of approval for the club.
