International musicians to perform in Music From Lands End
An international renowned concert violinist is pairing with up-and-coming musicians for the second year of the Music From Lands End festival.
Wareham summer resident Ariadne Daskalakis launched Music From Lands End last year, which puts young musicians on the cusp of professional careers together with more seasoned musicians for a series of classical music concerts.
"I've participated in many festivals around the world and I love this community and I always envisioned that a festival could fit very well here," said Daskalakis.
Daskalakis is a graduate of Harvard and Julliard, and she now teaches at the Cologne Conservatory for Music and Dance in Germany. The students who attend the conservatory will perform in the Music From Lands End festival.
"All the musicians are handpicked," said Daskalakis. "It's really rewarding for the older musicians to collaborate because they share different perspectives. ... The older musicians sometimes have new perspectives on the music. It's a learning experience for everyone involved."
The students hail from Thailand, Finland, and the Ukraine to name a few, and they'll be taking as few weeks out of their summers to hang around the South Coast playing chamber music and soaking up the local culture.
The opening concert will be held Sunday, July 28, at 5 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, located at 74 High Street. The show will feature intimate chamber music, including works by Dvorak and Bach.
Family concerts will be held on Thursday, August 1, and Friday, August 2, at 11 a.m. at the Wareham Free Library and Spinney Memorial Library, respectively.
The final concert will be held on Sunday, August 4, at 5 p.m. at the Church of the good Shepherd. The festive program will include works by Mendelssohn and Vivaldi.
Daskalakis will perform with Sebastian Gottschick on violin and viola, Sebastian Hess on cello, Simon Martyn-Ellis on the lute/theorbo, Paige Riggs on cello, and Karina Schmitz on violin and viola.
Young artists include Andria Chang, Mariya Krasnyuk, Mila Krasnyuk, and Sini Simonen, all playing violin.
The concerts are free, but donations are accepted.
