Intimate music will fill an intimate space at Wareham church
The Mastersingers by the Sea is a Falmouth-based group that will bring a unique choral to Wareham on March 1.
“Wareham has been very welcoming to the arts,” director Dr. David MacKenzie said. “We bring a different kind of offering.”
The mastersingers will be performing Fantasies on Birth, Death and Beyond at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 7:30 p.m. The program will be one hour long.
“We did a test run there, and we loved it,” MacKenzie said. “We would like to establish a regular presence in Wareham.”
The group’s selections range from very legendary names like Bach to current local names like Boston’s Larry Bell. The genres range, too, from 16th Century orchestral to an Omaha tribal prayer.
“I jokingly mimic the Star Trek line. I say, ‘We go where no chorus has gone before,’” MacKenzie said. “We try for a fresh, interesting, new performance for our audience.”
“Our audience has come to expect high quality performance, but it will be very new,” MacKenzie said.
This performance will be particularly unique as period instrumentalist will accompany the mastersingers – harpsichordist, viola da gambists, baroque and more.
“The performance will be a chamber chorus with a chamber orchestra,” he added. “We’re not trying to replicate other choral programs.”
MacKenzie said there’s a lot of music from the Renaissance to stuff written yesterday that hasn’t been performed much.
“Check us out. Try something new,” MacKenzie said. “Our say is ‘intimate music for intimate space.’”
Can’t make the March 1 performance? The mastersingers will also perform on March 2 at the First Congregational Church in Falmouth.
