Jag cook-off to be held at Dudley L. Brown VFW
The GLEAM Abroad Foundation and the Onset Cape Verdean Festival Association will be holding an inaugural Jag Cook-Off at the Dudley L. Brown VFW Post in Onset to benefit education in Cape Verde on Oct. 10.
The contest will begin at 7 p.m. and last until 10 p.m., but contestants should arrive between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Contestants will need to cook 16 cups of jag, a traditional beans and rice dish from Cape Verde, and bring the prepared dish in crockpots or catering dishes to the event. Contestants must also supply utensils and napkins.
Contestants are also encouraged to bring decorations, as dish presentation is also accounted for in final scores.
Applications must be received by October 5, 2015. Applications may be submitted by mail to The GLEAM Abroad Foundation, c/o OCVFA, P.O. Box 722, Onset, MA 02558. A registration fee of $15 must accompany the entry form. Make check or money order out to the GLEAM Abroad Foundation. No refunds will be made once a contestant is accepted. Once an application has been processed and accepted, the contestant will receive an email by October 8 spot to compete in the cook-off.
Judges will judges dishes based on taste and presentation. There will also be a ballot filled out by spectators that will be tallied up at the end of the night to determine the winner. The categories will be best taste, best presentation, and best overall jag. Anyone who wishes to participate as a taste tester must pay $2 on the day of the event at the door. Donations are also accepted.
