James E. “Jimmy” Croke, 83, died November 9, with family at his side. He was the husband of the late Muriel J. (Bowler) Croke.

Mr. Croke was born to James J. and Alice S. (Maher) Croke in Attleboro. He began working part-time for the First National Corporation at the age of 14. After graduating from Saint Raphael’s Academy, he served in the U.S. Army. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to the grocery business.

He moved to Wareham with the opening of The First National Supermarket on Main Street in the early 1960s. Later, he owned and operated Jimmy’s IGA Foodliner until he closed the store in 2004.

He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Barlow, and her husband Jeff, of Corpus Christi, TX, Arthur Carey, his wife Noreen, Linda Rinta of Wareham, and Stephen Carey of Buzzards Bay; his sister, Mary Johnson and her husband Ronald of Seekonk; eight grandchildren, Paul Jr., Andrew, Stephen Jr., Megan, Calli, Michael, Luke, and Molly; 4 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, John Croke and Raymond Croke.

Funeral services will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 12 p.m. Interment to follow at Agawam Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours are Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.
