John B. 'Babinho' Vicente, 80, supervisor for May Optical, photographer and marksman

John B. “Babinho” Vicente, 80, of Onset, died April 12 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston after a brief illness. He was the husband of Maria R. (Resende) Vicente.

Born in the Cape Verde Islands, Mr. Vicente was the son of the late Alberto B. and Theresa (Spinola) Vicente. While living in Cape Verde, Mr. Vicente was a professional photographer. Immigrating to the United States in 1966, he lived with his family in Norwalk, Conn. before moving to Onset in 1967. Mr. Vicente worked as a foreman for May Optical in Wareham for many years.

Mr. Vicente enjoyed shooting sports and received numerous awards for his marksmanship. He was a member of the former Rochester Rod and Gun Club. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle in his youth and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Teresa Vicente-Griffin of E. Wareham, Alberto B. Vicente of Holbrook, Raul B. Vicente of Milton, John B. Vicente, Jr. of Roseville, Calif. and Luis B. Vicente of Norton; his sisters, Cora Bairros, Dinora Perry and Carmen Monteiro all of Norwalk, Conn., Maria Martin of Bridgeport, Conn., Carminda Andrade of Boston; his brothers, Orlando B. Vicente and Ramiro B. Vicente both of Cape Verde Islands. He was predeceased by his daughter, the late Pearl B. Vicente, and his sister, the late Clotilde Bairros.

His funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham on Friday, April 20 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, Onset at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.
