John D. Duffy, 88, Decas School custodian, Wareham special police officer
John D. Duffy, 88, of Wareham, died June 4 at Kindred Transitional Care at Forestview after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Barbara J. (Alfrey) Duffy.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late James & Hannah (Meade) Duffy. Mr. Duffy served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
A longtime resident of Wareham, Mr. Duffy was a special police officer on the Wareham Police Department and was custodian for many years at the Decas School. He retired in 1993. He was an avid Red Sox fan, a lover of Irish music and John Wayne westerns, and loved spending time at the beach.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Barbara M. Russell of Wareham; his children, Jean M. Duffy of Wareham, Susan K. Lovenbury of Taunton, Steven J. Duffy of New Bedford, Michael R. Duffy and John K. Duffy both of Wareham, Gary R. Duffy of Marion, Timothy D. Duffy of Wareham, and Gail P. Fisher of W. Wareham; his sister, Katherine McCusker of Brockton; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, the late Barbara Ann Duffy and his son, the late Paul Duffy.
His funeral will be held on June 8 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, at 10 a.m.. Interment will be in Centre Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.
