John Gomes, 99

John J. Gomes, 99, of West Wareham died Dec. 15 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth after a brief illness.  He was the husband of the late Justa P. (Pina) Gomes.

Born in New Haven, Connceticut, he was the son of the late Samuel and Julie (Lopes) Gomes and moved to Wareham at the age of 13. Mr. Gomes was a proud member of IUOE Local # 4 and worked as a heavy equipment operator for many years including snow removal at Logan Airport in Boston. Always known for working, Mr. Gomes also sold used bricks from demolition jobs and was known as the “Brick Man.”

He was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army. Operating heavy equipment during the war, Mr. Gomes saw action in Tunisia, Rome and Central Europe.

Survivors include his sons, Robert S. Gomes, Ronald J. Gomes, Jeffrey S. Gomes, and Russell Getchell of West Wareham; his brother, Antonio Gomes of Plymouth; his sister, Pauline Livramento of West Wareham; eight grandchildren, many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, the late Laureen Gomes.

His funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. (Rt. 28), Wareham on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at. St. Mary’s Church, Onset Ave., Onset at 10 a.m.  Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham.  Visiting hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
