John H. Sutcliffe, 91, US Army veteran
John H. Sutcliffe, 91, died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at his home in Wareham.
Born in Boston, the son of the late John A. and Ellen (Harrison) Sutcliffe, John was a “Hyde Park” boy, living there for many years. A previous resident of Norwell, he summered in Buzzards Bay and moved to Wareham in 2004.
Mr. Sutcliffe worked for Boston Edison for 36 years and was a member of the Boston Edison Retirement Association.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Sutcliffe served during World War II. He served with the 26th Infantry Yankee Division, 110th Calvary, 180th Field Artillery, and in the 3rd Army in France under the command of General Patton.
In January 1945, Mr. Sutcliffe received a Bronze Star medal for meritorious service in Eastern France and Luxembourg. He also received a commendation for his assistance in extinguishing an ammunition truck that had caught fire.
An active member of the 26th Infantry Yankee Division Veterans Association, he received “Member of the Year” honors in 2008.
He is survived by his daughter Terry Horton, of Chepachet, RI; his son John R. Sutcliffe, of Boise, ID; his dear friend Joyce Soares, of New Bedford; five grandchildren, Whitney, Christina, Kyla and Dakota Horton and Hannah Sutcliffe. He was predeceased by his sisters, the late Alice St. Laurent and Ethel Read.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 28 at St. Peter’s Church on the Canal, Main Street, Buzzards Bay at 11 a.m. Internment will be in the Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne. Relatives and friends may visit on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church, prior to the service.
