Jolly times in Onset Village during Christmas celebration

Dec 10, 2016

It's the time of year again to talk to the Christmas tree.

Yes, the Christmas tree. Specifically, the Christmas tree at the Dudley L. Brown Square in Onset Village.

"I don't think you can top the talking tree," said Christine Spillane. "I really don't think that you can."

For two hours, residents were able to go up to the tree and have a conversation with it. Most of the time, the tree asked children what they want for Christmas.

"There's a reason she's call Miss Tree," said OBA volunteer Milly Burrows, referring to the female voice that comes from the tree.

It was just one of many little things to do in Onset during Onset Bay Association's Christmas in the Parks. Other activities included horse-drawn carriage rides taking off from Onset Pier, and cookie decorating, face painting, letters to Santa, and magic tricks at the Pier View restaurant.

Santa took pictures with children inside the Onset Fire Station, where residents helped themselves to donuts and hot chocolate.

The event has run for more than 25 years, and OBA president Kat Jones said the trick is to change it up each year.

"It's just a tested formula that has to get tweaked," she said. "We move around a little bit. We moved out of the library because we needed a little more space."

Jones called the event the "last hurrah for 2016" for the OBA.
