June Sherman Pierce Gainey, 84, of Old Fort, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, June 10 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Born in Wareham on Sept. 9, 1930, June was the daughter of the late Walter Pierce and Ellen Corse Smith.

She was an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Marion and also a former member of the Women of the Moose Family Center. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. June was preceded in death by her husband, Olin A. Gainey, Sr.

Surviving June are her children, Karen Darden and husband Bob of Floral City, Florida, Oleen Demotte and boyfriend Tim Knipp of Morganton, Olin A. Gainey and wife Sandra of Marion and Nolan Gainey and wife Leeann of Old Fort, also 14 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters Francis Florindo, Joyce McWillams and her husband Gardner, Gail Purdy and her husband Charles, all of West Wareham, Bonnie Hartley and her husband Henry of Rochester, Lucille Walker and her husband Marshall of Westland, Michigan, Laurianne Lowe of Minneapolis, Minnesota, her sister in law Debra Smith, of Plymouth, preceded in death by her brother John Smith, her brothers Francis Smith and wife Jean, Walter Perce Jr and his wife Carol, both of West Wareham.

The family will hold a private graveside service at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in North Carolina, officiated by the Rev. J.B. Cope.
