Kaleidoscope celebrates birthday, helps break handstand world record
It was a birthday celebration like no other. On Saturday, September 17, Wareham's Kaleidoscope of Dance and Gymnastics celebrated its 20th year in business with cake, face-painting... and 43 handstands.
The handstands were part of the USA Gymnastics organization's effort to break the world record for the most number of handstands completed at one time.
Across the country, 20,478 people participated at exactly 1 p.m. eastern standard time, including the 43 Kaleidoscope attendees.
The effort destroyed the previous record of 2,402 handstands, which was set by Australian gymnasts in Melbourne to promote the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships.
It was a different way to celebrate 20 years in business, said Bethany Gay of Kaleidoscope.
"We just kind of made a party out of it," she said. "We just wanted a fun way to celebrate our 20th birthday and we're excited to break a world record!"
