Karate on exhibition
The Asian American Kenpo Karate school held its first ever exhibition on Saturday afternoon, with nearly 60 students demonstrating their skills for friends and family.
Held at The Kaleidoscope of Dance studio, students from the ages of 4 years old to adults performed an array of chops, kicks, throws and other moves in sequences called "forms." More advanced students even used weapons in their moves!
Eleven-year-old Nathan French, son of lead instructor Bill French, was awarded his black belt to begin the ceremony, reaching the highest level of karate belts in just eight years.
"I like knowing that I'll be able to protect myself if somebody comes up to try and attack me," said French.
The exhibition was the first ever for the school, which had their annual tournament postponed this year.
"It was a way to get everybody together, and give the kids something to do at the end of the year," said Bill French.
The highlight of the afternoon for many of the students was when French was thrown by his wife who is also an accomplished martial arts student.
