Aug 13, 2024

WAREHAM- Kenneth W. Baker, Sr., 83, of Wareham, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024 at St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford. Ken was the son of Horace G. and Ruth E. (Dennison) Baker and brother to Ruth O’Brien, Arthur Baker and H. George Baker, all predeceased.

Ken was born in Waterbury, CT in 1941. He was a 3-season athlete and president of Leavenworth High School, Class of 1959 before marrying the love of his life Sandra and moving to Wareham in 1967.

Ken was a commercial fisherman and custom builder. He owned Ken Baker Construction with his son Kenneth Baker, Jr. and they renovated historic properties and did custom work throughout the Cape and islands.

An avid fisherman, Ken and his dog were often seen fishing the waters around Cape Cod for lobster, scallops and ground fish. His ‘reel’ expertise was catching striped bass, for which he was referred to as the legend. Ken was an avid hunter from local forests to the family cabin in northern Maine and loved to share his expertise with those closest to him.

Once retired, Ken found great joy in bird watching, planting seeds and providing garden seedlings in the spring to family and friends. He enjoyed watching the UConn girls and the Connecticut Suns basketball teams, trips to Mohegan Sun, playing cards with family, conversing with loved ones, and giving treats to all the grand dogs.

Ken leaves his devoted wife after 65 years of marriage, Sandra Warner Baker, a true love story. He also leaves his beloved children, Lisa Simmons and her husband David of Onset, Kenneth W. Baker Jr. (predeceased) and his wife Linda Baker of Bourne, Lori Briggi and her husband Stephen; Kim Foote and her husband Gordon; Keith Baker and his wife Karen, all of Wareham; his grandchildren, Aimee Blier, Cherie Blier, Kenneth Simmons, David Simmons, Joseph Simmons, Matthew Simmons, Brian Baker, Sunny Cabrera, Carlos Cabrera, Robert Briggi, Curtis Briggi, Cecilia Briggi Leavy, Darryl Foote, Leah Jones, Kelly Baker, and Keith Baker, Jr., many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and those he mentored through the years.

His 16 grandchildren will remember the hours sitting on Poppy’s lap as he told stories, taught them to color inside the lines, tested them with his super-strong handshake, timed them as they raced each other around the house, he judged the Easter egg coloring, and shared his wisdom as they grew up, and they will never forget his signature goodbye, “Catch ya later!”

Visiting hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – WAREHAM, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham.
