Kids take to the beach to learn about local wildlife

It's amazing the things you can find in your own backyard.

That was one of the many lessons that kids from the Wareham Boys and Girls Club learned during a beach exploration Thursday with the Buzzards Bay Coalition.

The kids walked from the Boys and Girls Club at the Hammond School down the street to Onset Beach, where they scoured the beach for various shells and sea creatures. The workshop was part of the "Kukoo for the Coast" program the Club puts on with local conservation groups.

"It's a group of activities to get kids used to the outdoors and learn about the local environment," said Sherbie Worthen, a board member of the Wareham Boys and Girls Club.

Sarah Gossett, community engagement coordinator with the Buzzards Bay Coalition, helped kids explore Onset Beach and taught them about the wide range of wildlife they can find on land, sea and air.

Youngsters Lilah Peluso and Makayla Pina said their favorite find from the beach was a horseshoe crab. Oysters, spider crabs, sea shells and scallops were some of the other items jangling around each child's bucket as they ran across the beach.

Worthen said this is the second year that representatives from the Buzzards Bay Coalition came to Onset Beach to educate and entertain the kids. She said later in May there will be an event centered around World Turtle Day, which is May 23.

"There are just so many opportunities around here to learn about the environment," she said.
