Kids will learn to command the sand at Sandcastle Day
Nothing represents a day at the beach for a child quite like building sandcastles.
The children, and adults, of Wareham will have a chance to build their own castles and learn from one of the best sculptors on Onset Beach Saturday at the Onset Bay Association’s inaugural Sandcastle Day.
The town has not seen a sandcastle day for quite some time, Onset Bay Association president Eleanor Martin said.
“We used to have a sandcastle competition, when we did it,” Martin said. “[Now] we are just doing a sandcastle day. It’s just a fun day for the kids.”
Martin said, Rodney Johnson, who calls himself The Sandcastle Man, will be there to teach kids and adults alike how to craft sand sculptures. Martin said Johnson told her to not only get sandcastle building supplies, but gardening tools, too.
“Rodney also wants us to give out Mardi Gras beads to all the kids,” Martin said. “We used the money that we made from the kayak poker run, and whatever donations we had.”
Martin also said she is in the midst of trying to get the three local ice cream shops to donate a free ice cream cone to every child who shows up.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 11. Martin said the event is about having fun and promoting tourism in the Onset area.
“We just want to get people down to the area to see Onset,” Martin said. “We want to get them to come down and come to the shops.”
