Kindness is alive and well in Wareham

Jun 14, 2016

To the Editor:

This last Sunday I witnessed such kindness I feel I must share it with Wareham Week readers.

A young man racing a friend (his own words) on a narrow lane near Swifts Beach lost control and crashed his truck, tearing down the metal link fences in front of three of my neighbors’ homes, before knocking down a flag pole on the last one. Crying, he stepped from his truck distraught, “I am so sorry! Please forgive me!”

One of my neighbors sat him down next to her on her front steps and then, she put her arms around him. Now I don’t know for sure if she was gently rocking him a little or not, but it sure looked like it.

“Let’s call your mom, honey,” she said.

Two Wareham Police cars arrived a minute later and I felt compelled to let them know how sorry he sounded and how nice the homeowners were being to him.

“Don’t worry, we’ll be good to him too,” an officer told me. The two officers treated and talked to him like a father would.

“This is bad kid,”  I heard an officer say. “But it’s nothing, nothing compared to how bad it could have been if you had hit a person, a child driving like that.”

The love and kindness this young man received from neighbors and our Wareham Police was so heartwarming it made me feel proud and blessed to live in this community.

Respectfully,

David Ricci
