Kiosks bring in cash as town works on parking program

Jul 9, 2014

The parking kiosks in Onset have pulled in over $40,000 since June 1 and the town is likely to exceed its goal of $90,000 in revenue for the summer.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said between July 18 and September of last year, the three kiosks in Onset generated $57,000, with $40,000 more coming in this year after three new parking kiosks were installed on June 1, including two on Onset Avenue and one at Shell Point.  The money raised last year helped to generate funds for the recently installed kiosks.

Selectman Steve Holmes said he is pleased with the progress of the program and its eventual move west into Wareham.

"It's just the start of the program," he said. "We're going to extend this from one end of the town line to the other."

Sullivan's announcement came on Tuesday night, less than 24 hours before the Board of Road Commissioners plan to meet to discuss any possible updates or amendments to the residential parking permit program in Onset.

The Commissioners adopted a parking program effective July 1 which prohibits non-residents from parking on residential streets for extended periods of time.

The program calls for residents to purchase Onset parking stickers for $30 ($15 for seniors) which allows them to park on newly designated "Resident-Only" streets, gives them access to trash transfer stations, as well as beach parking lots at Little Harbor Beach, Swifts Beach, and Swifts Neck.

Sullivan said the Onset sticker looks the same as the normal Beach and Transfer Station sticker. But any Onset resident that purchases one going forward will have “Onset” written on the sticker to differentiate them from non-Onset residents.

Any Onset resident that has already purchased not labeled “Onset” may remove that sticker and bring it to the Harbormaster’s office. They will be issued a new, properly- labeled sticker for the same vehicle at no extra cost.

The parking plan also includes guest passes for residents and permits for non-residents to park in specified areas.

The Commissioners will meet at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 in room 23 of Town Hall.
