'Knockabout' donation will send 6 boats to sailing club

Feb 14, 2017

A generous donation will send six, new 18’ Cape Cod Knockabouts built by the Cape Cod Shipbuilding Co. to an area sailing club.

Cape Cod Shipbuilding announced that one of the Knockabouts is already built and on display at the New England Boat Show. The boats were commissioned by a member of the Knockabout Class Association who will donate them to Sail Cape Cod.

“We are delighted to be building a new fleet of 18’ Knockabouts for this local up and coming sailing program.” said said Wendy J. Goodwin, president, Cape Cod Shipbuilding Co. “How fantastic that these sailboats will help teach beginner sailors of all ages on the Cape!”

The first Knockabout built in this run was on display at the Boat Builders Show on Cape Cod from Feb. 3 to 5.

The sailboat is now on display at the New England Boat Show in Boston until Feb. 19 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

The Knockabout was designed and built by the founder of Cape Cod Shipbuilding Co., Captain Charles S. Gurney in 1925. Knockabouts have been sailed at yacht clubs and sailing programs along the Atlantic Coast.

In the 1950s the Cape Cod Knockabout transitioned from wood to fiberglass hulls and boats were built by other craftsmen. Cape Cod Shipbuilding Co. again became the builder in the late 1980s. Fiberglass Knockabouts are still produced today by Cape Cod Shipbuilding Co. The Knockabout Class Association has active racing fleets located in Megansett, Waquoit, Lewis Bay and Woods Hole.
