Lady Vikings fall to Old Rochester in well fought showdown

Community turns out to support Trey Miranda at game

Wareham High School’s Tieyanna Yancey’s 22 points was more than double Old Rochester’s high scorer, but it wasn’t enough for a win.

Yancey and the Lady Vikings (7-9) were defeated 47-41 Saturday night at home.

The loss makes the team’s chance of securing a playoff berth more difficult with two road games ahead, three games in total are left in the season.

On Feb. 9 the Lady Vikings play Seekonk, then Fairhaven on Feb 12 before ending the regular season on Feb. 17 against New Bedford at home.

The close fought contest featured several lead changes and had Wareham up by a game high 6 points in the middle of the fourth quarter.

A 3-point shot from Yancey was quickly followed by a basket from Brianna Tavares making the score 37-31. Undeterred, the Bulldogs (5-10) fought back to close the gap, taking the lead 40-37 with three minutes left in the fourth quarter.

A big 3-point shot from Yancey tied the scored 40-40, but that was the closest Wareham would come to taking the lead for the rest of the game.

Despite the loss, the team and community did have something to celebrate.

Before tip off, 17-year-old Trey Miranda was called to center court. Diagnosed with brain tumors last November, Miranda has been the focus of community support, and several fundraisers have been held to offset the cost of expensive medical bills.

All proceeds from Saturday’s game were donated to the Miranda family.

“We were invited to the game because everyone wanted to help,” said Miranda’s mother, Teena. “We appreciate all the support from the school, the town and everyone else in the community.”
