Land trust to hold second public hearing on North Water Street seawall
Event Date:
A public hearing discussing the future of the North Water Street beach and seawall will be held Monday, May 5 at 5:30 p.m. in room 520 of the Multi-Service center located at 48 Marion Road.
This is the second hearing on this project which is looking into replacing the beach’s aging seawall. The Wareham Land Trust, who owns the property, will be presenting new ideas for the project based on community input.
The land trust is working with the Woods Hole Group, a Bourne-based environmental engineering firm to assess the condition of the seawall and evaluate the surrounding area.
The work done to date has been a part of a feasibility study of the beach and seawall which was paid for by an $85,000 state grant. The grant also allowed the land trust to bring the Woods Hole Group in.
The Woods Hole team documented the "environmental resources” on the property and identified the exact boundaries of the beach, salt marsh and dunes.
“The location and extent of those resource areas has a bearing on what you can and cannot do, regulations come into play relevant to proximity. It's better to get that background research done now,” Woods Hole Group Project Manager Adam Finkle said in a March 13 hearing.
In the previous hearing, attendees raised concerns over access, saying the current stairs down to the beach are unusable and they wanted to ensure the beach would remain public.
“My husband and I have monitored the site and we’ve seen how it's changed, the stairs don’t work, they’re dangerous, it is a project that needs to be done,” said Community Preservation Committee Treasurer Sandy Slavin, who attended the March 13 meeting as a resident.
The land trust and Woods Hole Group will present different plans for how the future of the sight could look and are looking for community members to offer their thoughts and ideas on the project at the May 5 hearing.
