Large water main break on Cromesett Road
A water main break on Cromesett Road near Route 6 shut off water services for the surrounding neighborhood Saturday morning.
Wareham Water Department crews have been on the scene since the early morning. Traffic is being diverted through Swifts Landing off of Swifts Beach Road to access Cromesett. All water is turned off to Cromesett area at this time, and will be back online this afternoon, according to water officials.
The department’s Operations Supervisor Shayne Lydon said the break will be fixed by around 1:30 p.m. today.
“It’s pretty straight forward and not that bad. Just getting to the pipe is the hardest challenge,” Lydon said, adding the cold temperatures and light snow makes the repair more difficult.
Crews are working to cut out the old, damaged section of the pipe and put a new pipe in its place. Numerous homes along the road have had their water shut off.
Lydon said the break occurred on an old water main line that received repairs some 15 years ago. He said the break, which spewed water out around 6:45 a.m., broke just past the previous repair.
Wareham Water District residents could see discoloration in water today, and residents are asked to avoid the area.
