Learning by doing: Kindergarten class publishes book

Nov 22, 2013

One local kindergarten class took its reading lesson to the next level, writing and publishing its own book.

When Darlene McQuade got an email asking if her classroom full of kindergartners would like to write and publish a book, she jumped at the opportunity.

"[StudentTreasures.com] offered that if we wanted to publish a book we could sign up with them and do it," she said.

"We started talking about what authors do and what illustrators do," to prepare for the project they were about to undertake.

The class decided to write an ABC book, giving each kid a chance to write about at least one letter and "they had to research that letter," McQuade explained.

The kids are drew pictures of items, animals and more that began with the corresponding letter, and write a little bit about it using "high frequency words" such as "the" and "see."

Quintin Becker said he decided to do an X-Ray fish for the letter X.

"I learned about books," he says. "We got the animals from the books."

McQuade emphasized the importance of the kids picking their own topic to ensure they enjoy what  they're writing about.
