While the library buildings remained closed, there are a wealth of resources online for those looking to learn more about the world or their ancestry, and for those looking to relax into a good book or movie.

And those offerings keep expanding: Just this summer, the Wareham Free Library added the Hoopla app to its digital collection, and the SAILS Library Network, of which Wareham is a member, has added a large Portuguese-language collection of digital and audio books to the Libby app.

“We are very excited to continue to try to find ways to increase access for the residents of Wareham to information and literature in all the languages, methods, and ways that we can,” said Library Director George Ripley.

Ripley said that he has been enjoying these resources himself. While testing out the online access to Ancestry.com’s library edition — which patrons can access from home — he found his great-grandfather’s World War II draft card.

The majority of the library’s digital resources are accessible by going to sails.overdrive.com or by downloading the Libby app to any smartphone, tablet, or e-reader. There, patrons can access digital books and audio books, many of which are available right away or that can easily be placed on hold.

Hoopla offers everything from digital books and audiobooks to movies, tv shows, comic books, and even newly-released music — all of which is available instantly. 

Those looking to keep up on the news in Massachusetts and around the world can access the Boston Globe and the New York Times online for free through the library. 

And those feeling academically-minded can access the Encyclopedia Britannica and journal articles through Gale Databases and Academic OneFile.

For those who like reading books the old-fashioned way, the library is offering curbside pick-up. Patrons can select specific items they want to borrow, or librarians can assemble a grab bag of three to five books in a specific genre. 

Books can be requested through the SAILS mobile app; over the phone at 508-295-2343, ext. 1011 or 1013; or online through the library’s website at www.warehamfreelibrary.org. 

When items are ready for pick-up, patrons will receive a text message, email, or phone call from the library and be asked to make a five minute appointment to pick up the items between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Patrons will be asked to give their name, library card number, and a brief description of their vehicle over the phone.

When at the library to pick up items, patrons should call the library’s fax number, 508-295-2678, to let staff know they are outside and open the trunk, rear door, or passenger side window of their vehicle. A librarian will come out and put the items in the vehicle in a single-use bag.

Patrons without vehicles or who do not have a library card should call the library to make arrangements. 

Patrons can return any items currently checked out to the book drop at the main library or Spinney Branch Library, fine-free, through the end of July. Items will be quarantined for three days upon their return.All items checked out on or before March 1 have had their due dates extended to July 31.
