License fee set at $150 for junk dealers and flea markets

Junk dealer and flea market licenses have been set at $150 annually.

The Board of Selectmen voted at its regular meeting Tuesday night to set the fee.

“The junk dealers license fee has been set at $150 from last year, and under the bylaw which was passed on October 26, and then approved by the state, the fine should be at least two thirds of the fee," said Selectment Judith Whiteside.

She also recommended that the fine be set at $100 a day for non-compliance, despite an objection voiced by Selectman Peter Teitelbaum.

Teitelbaum said that he spoke with the chairman of the Junk Bylaws Committee and advocated for $100 license fee, instead. He stated that since there will be many new licenses issued under the bylaw, the lowered fee would gain a “huge revenue for the town” anyway.

The vote was 4 –1, Teitelbaum being the only Selectmen to vote against the $150 fee.
