The Canal Sharks Squirt A hockey team took home the gold medal in the CAN/AM Challenge Cup tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y. this past weekend.

The Canal Sharks are a south shore based youth hockey team with players from Wareham, Bourne, and Sandwich. The players range in age from nine to 10 years old. The team took home gold with a 8-3 win against the Assabet Valley Patriots of Concord, MA in the Albertville Gold Medal playoff game.

The tournament took place in the historic Olympic Center sports complex, known for hosting the Miracle On Ice game in 1980.

The Squirt A team won all five games in the tournament against teams from across the country.

They opened the tournament strong with a 10-1 win against the CT Jr Whalers of Norwalk, Conn. followed by a 9-3 victory against the South Shore Kings of Foxboro, Mass.

Two team members from Wareham, Luke Dennon, grade 5 and Owen Dennon, grade 4 played in the games.

According to team member parent Emily Berry, many of the Squirt A team members have been playing together for 5 years.

“They work really well together, they are a little town team that played against these club teams and they did a great job,” said Berry.
