Losses continue to pile up for Gatemen
Any chance of the Gatemen seeing a great improvement from last year’s 9-29 record are beginning to fade as the Wareham dropped four games of five since last Wednesday, July 2.
On Wednesday, the Gatemen (7-17) lost to the Brewster Whitecaps 12-5. The Gatemen rallied in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game 4-4, but Brewster came right back at Wareham, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning. A series of defensive miscues and timely hitting for Brewster ultimately led to the loss.
On Friday, the Gatemen dropped another tough one to the Bourne Braves by a score of 14-6. The Bourne batters roughed up Gatemen pitchers with a total of 13 hits. Though the game was close early on, Bourne scored eight runs in the last three innings to defeat the Gatemen. One bright spot for the Gatemen was the play of catcher Chris Chinea, who had three hits including a double and a run-scored.
The only win during the stretch for the Gatemen was on Saturday against the Cotuit Kettleers, which saw pitcher Kyle Cody go eight strong innings while allowing only three runs in Wareham’s 7-3 victory. DH Willie Calhoun had a hit, a run-scored, and two RBIs to lead the Gatemen offensively.
Any hopes of a winning streak dwindled quickly, though, as the Gatemen lost two straight on Sunday and Monday, losing to Orleans 5-1 and Bourne 8-5.
“We tried to be really big at the plate today and had 12 strikeouts,” said Head Coach Cooper Farris following the loss to Orleans. “We had a few situations where we could have scored a few runs, but we just didn’t have good at-bats.”
The Gatemen will face the Hyannis Harbor Hawks on Friday night at home at 7 p.m.
