Man airlifted to hospital after dirtbike accident

Alcohol determined as a factor in the crash

A Wareham man was airlifted to a Boston hospital after he and a passenger collided with a car while riding a dirtbike on Swifts Beach Road Wednesday night, according to police.

The 30-year-old man and his passenger, a 22-year-old woman, collided head-on with a car that was slowing to make a turn onto Shady Lane shortly before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to Wareham Police.

Police said the man riding the dirtbike was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol.

The man and woman on the bike were transported to Tobey Hospital by Wareham EMS, where the man was later airlifted to a Boston area hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the car, a 58-year-old Wareham resident, was not injured.

According to police, the two were not wearing helmets and were thrown from the bike after the collision. Police also said the bike was being operated without lights, was unregistered and uninsured at the time of the accident. No charges have been filed against the other driver.
