Manuel J. Garcia, 85
Manuel J. Garcia, 85, of Onset, passed away Monday April 14. Manuel was the husband of Mary Z. (Silva) Garcia of Onset. Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Manuel and Maria (Sardina) Garcia.
Soon after his birth, his family returned to the island of Madeira in Portugal. At the age of 19, he returned to the United States. A Korean War veteran, sergeant first class, Garcia served in the U.S. Army, and decorations include: Korean Service Medal with six Bronze Service Stars, a Combat Infantry Badge, an Occupation of Germany Medal, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, a Good Conduct Medial, and the Bronze Star.
After returning from Korea, Manuel attended a technical school and began working for IBM. He retired from IBM in 1987 as an engineering manager after 30 years of service. Manuel enjoyed fishing and operated a charter fishing boat called The Portuguese Fisherman LTD.
An active member of his community, Manuel was a communicant of Saint Patrick’s Church, a past District Deputy and Exalted Ruler of Wareham Elks Lodge 1548, and a member of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in New Bedford.
In addition to his wife, Manuel is survived by his children; Manuel Garcia of North Carolina, Cynthia Garcia of Onset, Thomas Garcia of Foxboro, and Timothy Garcia of Onset. Manuel is also survived by eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many loving relatives and friends. He is the brother of Hilda Schnare of Port Charlotte, FL, the late Anthony Garcia, and the late Lenore Rodriguez.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday April 22, at 9 a.m. at the Wareham Village Funeral Home, 5 Center Street Wareham, followed by his funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Saint Patrick’s Church, 82 High Street, Wareham. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, 1 Bennington Blvd. in Bourne. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
