Martial arts team shines in June competitions
The Nexus Martial Arts competition team dominated in regional tournaments this month.
David Appleton, a Nexus Youth Leadership team member, won both the gi and no gi divisions at the North American Grappling Association New England Championships held earlier this year. This month, Appleton advanced in his division and took home gold again at the competition.
“We are really proud of Davy, not just for his wins but for what a great example he is of what our program is all about,” said Nexus owner and chief instructor Stephen Whittier. “He is a really kind, warmhearted kid who came to us without being athletic or having an aggressive bone in his body. Now he is still just as nice and easygoing, but he has developed into a real leader and through hard work and determination has become an excellent competitor as well.”
Six of the Nexus adult team members competed in the Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament this past weekend, and came home with a bevy of medals, including five gold medals.
Jeff Perez moved up to the advanced gi and no gi divisions after sweeping the intermediate ranks at the last tournament without a single point being scored against him. Perez, a college student and former Marine Corps team leader, is currently training for his mixed martial arts debut.
