Maureen Elizabeth (Shea) DeWitt, 77
WAREHAM – Maureen Elizabeth (Shea) DeWitt, 77, of Wareham, passed away on May 11, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. Maureen remained strong to the end, her courage and fighting spirit never wavered. She was the daughter of the late Edward T. and Catherine J. (Sullivan) Shea.
She was born in Boston and lived in Dorchester and Brockton before moving to Wareham in 1986.
She worked as a Purchasing Agent for NOAA in Woods Hole for 15 years until her retirement in 2000. Previously she worked at the VA Hospital in Brockton and Charlestown Naval Shipyard.
Volunteering was very fulfilling to Maureen and she worked with a variety of organizations over the years including Tobey Hospital, St. Patrick’s Church, and women’s shelters. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends despite usually losing. Gardening, planting and working in the yard were always a source of joy. She loved the excitement of sports and was known to cheer loudly, whether it was the Red Sox, Patriots, or her grandchildren playing. Maureen was a connoisseur of chocolate, ice-cream, and chocolate ice-cream and a proud attendee of the annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl.
She loved animals, having rescued a few special dogs over the years. But most of all Maureen loved her family, the laughter and love they brought to her was immeasurable and she never ever missed a party.
She was always able to see the good in people. With the help of her friend Bill W. she always provided guidance and wisdom to those in need of support.
Survivors include her son, Derek DeWitt and wife Heather (Michel) her grandchildren, Brandon, Jason, and Matthew of Cheshire CT. Her 3 brothers; Rusty Shea and wife Karen of Wareham, Gary Shea and wife Sue of East Bridgewater, and Edward and wife Michelle of Halifax. Her sister, Jacquelyn Shea and wife Donna of Brockton; her nephews & nieces, Lorraine Pigeon and husband Mark and great nephews Michael and Mathew of Canton, Kim Dalton-Rubeski and husband Scott and great niece Shealy and great nephews Josef and Jake of Marshfield, Lisa Shea of Brockton. Gregory Shea and his wife Ali and children Anna and Sylvia. Patrick Shea and his wife Laura and children Olive and Samuel. Niece Courtney Madden and her husband Frank and niece Kaitlin Shea; her close family friend, Diane Zine of Wareham. She was the sister of the late Michael Shea and Catherine (Shea) Dalton.
