Media helps Wareham Police nab alleged Target thieves
Wareham Police have arrested two individuals in connection with thefts of DVDs from local Target stores totaling $10,000.
The alleged thefts occurred at the Wareham Crossing Target and the Target location in Dartmouth. On Monday, January 31, Wareham Police Public Information Officer Bill Fihlman released surveillance photos of two suspects, which were broadcast on Boston television news stations. Phone calls came in to the Wareham Police Department’s tip line almost immediately, police said.
The first call came in shortly after Fox 25 aired the photos during the 11 p.m. news, police said. The investigation continued as additional calls came in, and Wareham Police were able to quickly identify the pair.
Wareham detectives arrested Darlene Duran, 38, of 343 Rear Huttleston Ave., Fairhaven, and her accomplice, Paul Lessa, 41, of the same address, without incident at approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday. The detectives were assisted by Fairhaven police.
Both individuals are facing the same charges of seven counts of larceny over $250. Lessa is facing an additional charge of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon - a shopping cart. At one point during their crime spree, Lessa allegedly struck an individual with a cart while the pair was trying to make its escape, police said.
Duran and Lessa are being held at the Wareham Police station awaiting a bail decision, and will be arraigned at Wareham Fourth District Court on Wednesday.
Fihlman said he would like to thank Fox 25 and all of the other media outlets who helped in the capture of these two felons by airing their photos. Wareham Police Chief Richard Stanley also commended the media for their cooperation and applauded the members of the department for their quick action, according to a Wareham Police press release.
