Memorial scholarship foundation celebrates Little League players

Oct 14, 2017

Though a planned softball game was rained out, members of the Joseph X. Vasconcelos Memorial Scholarship Foundation still hosted a cookout on Saturday to raise money for two scholarships and celebrate the Wareham Little League players of the year.

Family and friends of Vasconcelos, a 2006 graduate of Wareham High School who was killed in a car accident in 2009 at age 21, came together to talk, eat and celebrate baseball, one of Vasconcelos’ favorite things.

The event was in place of the foundation’s annual memorial baseball tournament which was cancelled due to rain this summer. Vasconcelos' friends and family gathered for food and music at the Elks Lodge.

“Joey’s close friends and family are a big part of [the foundation],” said Alyson Agoglia, who knew Vasconcelos. “This brings the community that was around him together.”

The scholarship, now in its ninth year, provides two $1,000 scholarships to Wareham High School graduates every year. The foundation sells T-shirts, bracelets, raffle tickets and other merchandise to raise the money.

“We want to keep the scholarship going as long as we can,” Agoglia said.

This year, the foundation also recognized Wareham Little League players of the year in the minor and major league, awarding trophies to the players, Matthew Ansell and Freddie Rosen Tremont.
