Middle School donates over 2,000 canned goods for people and animals in need

Wareham Middle School Student Council Member Kylah Ormsbee has always liked helping people.

“We all like helping people,” she said. “Even if I don’t really like someone. If they are sad or mad I want to comfort them.”

With that spirit, Ormsbee and 40 other Student Council members organized a food drive for Damien’s Food Pantry and Champs Animal Shelter on Friday, Nov. 18.

The Student Council, fellow students and staff members donated 2,105 nonperishable food items to the organizations. According to Ormsbee, last year's total was also around 2,000.

The Council has been organizing the food drive for Damien’s Food Pantry around the holidays for the last several years, according to Student Council Advisor Jessica Hathaway.

“We want to help people in need, especially during this time of year,” Hathaway said.

This was the first year that the students decided to donate to Champs Animal Shelter in addition to the food pantry.

“We figured that the animals need to eat too,” said Hathaway.

Classes competed to donate the most food items for a chance to win a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card.

The winning class for this year’s food drive was Mrs. King’s class, which donated 347 items.
