Mobile home park residents in Onset washed out when it rains

Residents of a mobile home park in Onset are wading through a drainage issue that has landed the town in a lawsuit, and say the problem still isn't fixed.

Onset Beach Mobile Home Park resident William Brophy appeared before the Board of Selectmen during the "citizen's participation" portion of the meeting on Tuesday to address severe flooding in the park.

"I live there and I can't get out of there when it rains," said Brophy. "The issue I have is, I can't get out of my house."

Brophy maintains that the flooding is a result of a drainage system installed by the town that isn't performing its intended purpose.

Noting that the town is in litigation over the matter, Selectmen Chair Peter Teitelbaum said the board was prohibited from discussing the matter in open session.

"Once we get sued, our lips are sealed," said Teitelbaum.

Brophy said he was not aware that the town had already been sued over the matter. Town Attorney Richard Bowen reiterated that the board could not discuss the issue.

"When a matter's in litigation, it's not appropriate for the board to comment on it," said Bowen.

Brophy left some of the photos he had taken with Bowen, and Teitelbaum assured him that the board is aware of the situation: "We're not trying to blow you off."
