Multitalented Gateman pitcher gaining recognition in the music industry

In Wareham, Gatemen pitcher Daniel Feehan is probably best known for his throwing arm, but the multitalented 21-year-old is quickly making a name for himself in a different field.

The New Hampshire native is garnering recognition in the music industry as a singer and songwriter. Feehan has been tapped by famous recording artists for his songwriting talents, including hip-hop star Sean Kingston and American Idol David Archuleta.

But Feehan says it is family, not fame, that fuels his passion for music.

Feehan began playing baseball when he was four, but he was born into music. Both of his parents are musicians, and his band, Gate City Squad, is comprised of his brother and cousin.

“We write all our own songs. My brother writes the music... and I write lyrics,” he explained.

Feehan said the group began recording in his parents' home recording studio when he was 11 years old. He said there is no genre that truly defines the group. Instead, the members prefer to create and incorporate catchy hooks, melodic riffs, and heartfelt lyrics into any type of song.

“I listen to everything,” said Feehan, who recently branched out from the band to launch his solo career under the stage name “Dano.”

Feehan describes his musical style as a mix of rhythm and blues, pop, and new age. He and said he is influenced by artists Chris Brown and Usher.

In addition to writing and singing, Feehan also plays guitar and drums.

Though Feehan loves to perform, he said his main focus is baseball.

“You don’t always get a chance to play in the pros,” he said. “[Music] is a nice back-up plan.”

Feehan is a junior at the University of Connecticut where he is majoring in Music Studies and Communication.
