Music camp in Onset offers aspiring musicians a place to play
There's beautiful music being made in Onset.
At the Community of Christ Campground in Onset, set back from the busy avenue and far from the downtown shops, young musicians are working to hone their musical skills.
During a recent practice, as her three students sang and performed the song "Lean on Me," teacher Michele Bowlin encouraged them to play their hearts out.
"I'd rather hear a big, crazy mistake than a mousy one," she told them.
Bowlin, owner of Music of the Bay, has teamed with the folks at Cranberry Coast Concerts to provide local children in grades 3 through 8 the chance to attend music day camp this summer. In addition to jamming, the kids can do arts and crafts, go swimming, at Onset Beach and play outside on the playground.
"This is the first year in a few years we've done it," said Bowlin. "I thought it was important to run it, even if we didn't have many people, so we could get established."
There's nothing wrong with starting small, and her three students who signed up for the first session seemed to feel it was well worth it.
Nine-year-old Victoria Burgess is auditioning to be on a "Kidz Bop" album in the fall, and has been musically inclined for quite some time already.
She sang the National Anthem at a Bourne Braves game recently.
"At first, I was really nervous because I didn't know where I was going," said Victoria. Once she had the microphone in hand, nerves kicked in, but soon subsided.
"I started singing and they have an echo in the speakers," she explained. "When I heard the echo it wasn't so bad."
Victoria has been a student of Bowlin's for awhile.
"When I was in first grade, my mom wanted me to play violin," Victoria said. "I went to Ms. Bowlin and got set up, and I've been playing ever since."
At camp on Thursday, July 11, Victoria was on vocals and was also trying to master an instrument she's been playing on her own for awhile: the flute.
"She was holding it backwards" when she first got to camp, according to Bowlin.
For 13-year-old Grace Dufromont, music is a way for her to work through her anxieties and soothe her mind, she says.
"It's an outlet where I can get my feelings out," she explained.
She's been playing guitar for three years, but started out on the trumpet when she entered middle school in Bourne.
"You have three options when you go into middle school: chorus, band, and general music," said Grace, explaining she joined band because it seemed like the most fun.
Like Victoria, Grace has also had the opportunity to play in front of a large audience, entertaining Providence Bruins fans with songs such as "We Will Rock You".
Even though she's on trumpet when she's with the school band, classic rock is more up her alley.
"I like more rock and roll," said Grace."I like the Beatles, that's my first favorite."
The first session of camp is almost over, but the second session begins July 29 and runs through August 9. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost of one session for one child is $450, and another $30 to rent an instrument if needed.
